9 Jan 2012: Witness number eleven


After the tribunal took cognisance in relation to offences alleged against Nizami, and dealt with the application of Gholam Azam's lawyers, witness number eleven took the stand in the trial of Delwar Hossain Sayedee and gave his evidence-in-chief
Prosecution: What is your name?

Witness: My name is Abdul Jalil Sheikh.

Prosecution: Where are you from?

Witness: I from the village Chithulia.

Prosecution: How old are you?

Witness: I am about 59/60 years old.

Prosecution: What is your profession?

Witness: I am a mechanic.

Prosecution: How old were you in 1971?

Witness: I was about 19/20 years then.

Prosecution: What was your profession then in 1971?

Witness: I used help my father in his fish business.

Prosecution: Can you please tell us what happened in 1971? I mean what did the Pakistani soldiers, peace committee members, rajakars do at that time?

Witness: Almost 10/15 Pakistani soldiers and rajakars came to our village and entered into Manik Poshari’s house. Seeing the same, his family members ran away and hid in the nearest jungle and I also hid with them. Then I saw rajakars Delu Shikder alias Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Sekender Shikder, Moslem Maulana, Danesh Mollah, Hakim Kari and Ruhul Amin loot stored rice and goods from Manik Poshari’s house. Then they distributed the same among the local people. However, Delu Shikder alias Delwar Hossain Sayedee kept the valuable goods with him. I saw the rajakars distributing momey among themselves and the put kerosene on the house.

Prosecution: Who put kerosene [on the house]?

Witness: Delu Shikder alias Delwar Hossain Sayedee, Sekender Shikder and Danesh Mollah.

Prosecution: What happened then?

Witness: Then they sat fire on the house and when they saw that fire has been sat properly all over the house they were about to leave. At that time they found Ibrahim Kutti and Mofiz Uddin Poshari. The rajakars grabbed them and tied them with a rope. Then the rajakars along with Ibrahim Kutti and Mofiz approached towards Parerhat marketplace. Then they stopped on the bridge which was on their way to Parerhat marketplace. Then they untied Ibrahim Kutti and took him to the thana ghat (boat dock of police station) and the Pakistani army shot him dead upon a signal given to them by Delwar Hossin Sayedee. Then, they went their camp at Parerhat marketplace taking Mofiz Uddin Poshari with them.
